Tips for Walkers

It’s easy to raise awareness about mental illness and raise funds to improve the lives of those affected by mental illness. All you have to do is:

  • SET A GOAL: This very simple thing is the key to successful fundraising. Let’s say you set a goal of $100.

  • MEET YOUR GOAL: It’s not hard! Just ask 10 people for $10! (Ask by phone, email, mail, Facebook or in person!

  • SURPASS YOUR GOAL: It’s as easy as writing a letter, email, or Facebook post asking everyone you know to support your efforts. Use the Stride website to collect donations also at www.namibucksstride.org, and set up a Facebook Fundraiser for @NAMIBucks!

  • DOUBLE YOUR DOLLARS: Ask if your employer has a matching gifts program. Ask your donors if their employers will match their gifts.

Ask not only your co-workers, family and friends, but your hair dresser or barber, your mail carrier, your kids' teachers, your clients, your baker, your favorite store owners and others you interact with regularly.

See DoJiggy's Participant Fundraising Library for fundraising ideas and tips, sample letters, a detailed User Guide to the Participant Control Panel, and more!

Tips for Team Captains

  • ASK: Reach out to friends, neighbors, and fellow workers to join you in walking.

  • TALK ABOUT IT: Tell your teammates why this walk is important to you and ask them to do the same with their network.

  • LEAD BY EXAMPLE: Create a team and a web page at www.namibucksstride.org and encourage your teammates to do the same. Make a donation to yourself and the walk.

  • PROMOTE IT: Use posters, personal letters, emails, videos, and social media to build your team and secure donations.

  • BRAND YOUR TEAM: Create a team name, design a team t-shirt or accessory to make a visual impression. Encourage friendly competition among friends!

Sample Letter and E-mail Message

Dear ________________,

On May 18, 2019, I will be participating in the NAMI Bucks County Stride for Mental Health Awareness. My goal is to increase understanding of mental health, eliminate stigma, and help raise money to bring NAMI's support and education programs to all who need them at no cost.

One in four adults and one in five children experience mental health challenges in any given year, yet half won't get help. Those problems can contribute to the onset of more serious long-term conditions. One in 17 adults live with a mental illness such as major depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Approximately one-half of chronic mental illness begins by the age of 14 and three-quarters by age 24.  Unfortunately, long delays−sometimes decades−often occur between the time symptoms first appear and when people get help.

Any amount you give is greatly appreciated. Just $5 provides access to our helpline, $10 provides one week of support groups, $20 will teach a teen about mental health warning signs and how to seek help, and $100 gives one individual or family member a full NAMI education course. The knowledge that you share my commitment to this important cause is important to me, and you will be in my mind and heart as I participate in this worthwhile event. Please go to www.namibucksstride.org to donate.

NAMI Bucks County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to building better lives for all individuals and families affected by mental illness through no cost education, advocacy and support programs. Their tax ID number is 20-4135679.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
